Homeland Insecurity - Blame Iran!
Quote of the Day:
"It had a very sinister appearance," Coakley told reporters. "It had a battery behind it, and wires."
Have you been following the story of the Cartoon Network advertising campaign involving Lite Brite like devices that the Boston thought police mistook for "bomb-like" devices. Here's a picture of one such nefarious device:
It's a guy giving you the finger! That is so obviously NOT al-Qaeda! When have you known al-Qaeda to invoke humor, sacrasm or even biting irony? They are definitely more of the "We'll just lop your heads off" type of jihadist.
Apparently this advertising campaign went on in several other major US cities as well, NYC, Philly, Seattle among them. Can you imagine if security officials in all those cities had responded as Boston did? US airspace would be shutdown again, the stock market would crash resulting in global economic depression, Bush would blame Iran, Iran would say we're nuts (which we apparently are), we'd invade Iran because of their state-sponsered Lite Brite terrorism...
I think that this is in part due to the hysteria we have so effectively created in this country over terrorism. The Department of Homeland Insecurity (don't get me wrong I'd gladly take a Fed job there) tells us constantly of why we Americans should be afraid. I mean check out this website and tell me they're not in the business of fear mongering: www.ready.gov
Average American families should be making plans for the end of American civlization? Can you say "duck and cover"? Can you say bomb shelters? This is crazy... no amount of planning is going to matter when Ali Akbar Muhammed sidles up next to you in his parka in July and reaches for the detonation cord. Yeah, you might have a will in place and life insurance set up for your family, but you're still d-e-a-d, dead. Fear, planning makes you feel safe, but it also makes you cognizant of the fact that you should be apprehensive and suspicious. Sounds like a real happy life to me. Besides, how much faith does it instill in you to know that your government has such faith in their own abilities to protect you that they want you to also protect yourself. Isn't this what we pay taxes for? Service?
I think what's happened in Boston is simply symptomatic of the state of fear that has been created for this country post 9-11-01. This is a self-destructive cycle with no end in sight. War, DHS, DNI, big government, stripping of civil liberties is not the answer. Sound, rational policy is a big part of the answer.
